Everybody has seen it. The fence that looked sharp the summer it went up, and by the following August it has gone gray, two pickets have cupped, and one section leans just enough to bother you every time you pull into the driveway.
That is almost never bad luck. It is usually the wrong wood, the wrong stain, or posts that did not go deep enough into Dallas clay. All three are decisions made before anybody picks up a hammer, which means they are decisions you can get right.
We sell the material and we do not install, so nothing we tell you here is aimed at winning a labor bid. We have been supplying Dallas fences since 2008, and we have heard how the bad ones went wrong.
Cedar or pressure-treated pine?
This is the first fork in the road, and neither answer is wrong. They just serve different priorities.
- Pressure-treated pine if you want the most fence for your budget and do not mind restaining every few years. It is chemically treated against rot and insects and holds up dependably in DFW.
- Cedar if you want a fence that resists rot and insects naturally, ages into a silvery patina if you let it, and you would rather pay more upfront for less maintenance later.
Whichever you choose, we recommend staining for longevity. Cedar will silver beautifully left alone, but stain is the single biggest thing you can do to make a fence last — and pressure-treated pine benefits just as much. Straight from our own cost breakdown, for a standard 6-foot privacy fence:
- Installed — $18 to $35 per linear foot, depending on species and style
- Materials only, if you are supplying your own labor or hiring it separately — roughly $10 to $20 per linear foot
- A typical quarter-acre backyard, about 150 to 200 linear feet — $2,700 to $7,000 installed

What actually drives the price
- Wood species — pine is the budget option, cedar costs more upfront.
- Height — an 8-foot fence costs meaningfully more than the standard 6-foot.
- Picket style — side-by-side is standard and budget-friendly. Board-on-board looks better and blocks more, but uses noticeably more material.
- Stain — we push Ready Seal for a reason. It soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top, so it will not peel or leave lap marks, and it survives a Texas summer. It costs more. It is worth it.
- Gates and hardware — every gate adds hinges, latches, and usually extra framing so it does not sag in a year.
- Dallas clay — our soil often means deeper post holes and more concrete, especially on uneven lots. This is the step people skimp on, and it is the reason fences lean.
- Wholesale vs. retail — big-box markup adds 20 to 30 percent to material cost versus buying direct.
